What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a process that gently removes the outer layers of skin. The hand piece glides over the skin, sucking and at the same time debrading the skin using fine crystals. The depth varies depending on the patient's individual requirements.

There are other forms of dermabrasion that will penetrate deeper but such procedures are more precisely performed by Erbium Laser.

Cosmetic applications of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is well suited to skin rejuvenation. Young, healthy, fresh skin exfoliates naturally renewing itself every four to six weeks. As the skin ages, the effects of the sun and time have a detrimental effect. The skin fails to exfoliate as it has in the past and layers of dead, leathered skin can accumulate, giving an aged appearance.

Microdermabrasion removes the outer layer of the skin by abrading it using fine crystal particles. The suction increases the blood circulation to the skin, resulting in a fresh, healthy, plump appearance. With the removal of the dead cell layer, moisturisers can be rapidly absorbed.

To have your skin feeling and looking younger, it is recommended that you have three treatments, one week apart, and then every few months to maintain your results. This procedure does not have any real 'down time'. You can return to normal activity immediately after treatment, however your face will be a little red for a few hours.

For older or severely sun damaged skin, Erbium Laser resurfacing is usually recommended for optimum results.

Medical applications of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion also treats active acne by removing the outer layer of dead skin, helping to break the acne cycle. The suction action also clears out blocked pores helping the skin's pores to function normally. A course of treatments may be recommended.

Erbium Laser resurfacing is an alternative treatment for acne scarring. Erbium Laser also requires several treatments.
